F Gary Gray has revealed he'd love the cast of his first Italian Job movie to appear in the second.

The filmmaker, who is directing The Italian Job 2, remade the 1969 Michael Caine classic in 2003 starring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Seth Green, Mos Def and Edward Norton.

Gray revealed: "The script's coming in soon and we'll see... I hope it's a great story and better than the first - I'd love to play with the crew again. We had a great time making that movie, so we'll see."

The Law Abiding Citizen director praised the stars he cast in the first film, insisting he couldn't have made the film without them.

He said: "It really was great. You could rely on the spectacle and the action, which a lot of action films... they rely on those things, but to have a cast that breathes a certain life, a certain heart and a certain soul to the film, and I think that when you can root for criminals, you know you have a good set of actors. They were pretty amazing."

But don't expect the sequel to return to Venice.

Gray said of making the first movie: "Venice was the most memorable part, because to shoot in Venice you can point the camera in any direction and it's standing art.

"It was my first experience in Venice and it was amazing, beautiful, and to have the co-operation of the government there was great and I don't think they'll ever allow anyone to have a boat chase in Venice ever again, so enjoy it, because I don't think it'll ever happen again."

:: Gray's Law Abiding Citizen is released on Blu-ray and DVD on April 12.
