Jim Carrey's next role could be in Mr Popper's Penguins

Jim Carrey is in talks to star in an adaptation of the illustrated children's book Mr Popper's Penguins.

Freaky Friday and Mean Girls director Mark Waters is in discussions about heading up the movie adaptation, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Greenberg filmmaker Noah Baumbach had been on board to write and direct with Ben Stiller attached to star, but the pair then left the project.

But Owen Wilson and Jack Black are now also said to be possibilities for the role, and Little Fockers star Ben may still return to the project.

Fox owns the movie rights to the classic American book, about a couple who take in a few penguins and suddenly find themselves overrun with so many of the birds they could fill a zoo.

The project could go in two directions, either a soul-searching metaphor movie or a kid-friendly comedy packed with animal jokes, like Jim's previous vehicle Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
