Carey Mulligan has admitted she was "speechless" after being nominated for a Best Actress Bafta.

The 24-year-old got the nod for her performance in An Education, and is also in the running for the Orange Bafta Rising Star award.

"Two nominations - I'm absolutely speechless!" she said.

The British actress went on: "This year has been the most amazing year for me and I'm really delighted that the film is being recognised."

Carey is up against Julie And Julia star Meryl Streep, who bagged a Golden Globe earlier this week, for the Best Actress gong.

Completing the list are Irish teen star Saoirse Ronan for The Lovely Bones, Gabourey Sidibe for Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire, and Audrey Tautou for Coco Before Chanel.

The Baftas will take place on February 21 at the Royal Opera House in London.
