Carey Mulligan has revealed working on Broadway gave her a reality check.
The Oscar-nominated actress said she learned a lot when she was working on stage at the start of this year.
"I learned quite a few lessons about self-indulgent acting when I was doing the play," she laughed.
"I used to do shows where I thought I was really brilliant and I'd come off stage and the audience were completely unresponsive."
She added: "I got a million notes from my director."
Carey flew into the Toronto International Film Festival to promote her new movie Never Let Me Go, where she stars alongside her former Pride And Prejudice co-star Keira Knightley.
The star explained just how fortunate she feels to be enjoying a successful acting career.
"I love it so much, I'm so lucky and I do want to tell nice stories," she said.
"My escape is probably as important as allowing the audience to escape."
