The An Education star has been offered the coveted lead role of the manipulative heroine in the acclaimed filmmaker's adaptation of The Great Gatsby, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby) and Tobey Maguire (narrator Nick Carraway).

Carey was at the Fashion Council Awards in New York when she got the call from Baz, and burst into tears on the red carpet in front of Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour, reported Deadline.

Baz said: "Specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: 'Hello, Daisy Buchanan'."

The Oscar-nominated actress apparently beat others like Keira Knightley, Rebecca Hall, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Michelle Williams and Scarlett Johansson.

"Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world's most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting," Baz continued.

"The results from the workshop process on The Great Gatsby have been very encouraging. There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film."

Carey next stars in Never Let Me Go with Keira and Andrew Garfield, and will play Eliza Doolittle in John Madden's remake of My Fair Lady.
