Captain America: The Winter Soldier - which stars Chris as the shield-wielding superhero and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow - took in 41.4 million dollars (£24.7 million) in the US and 60.6 million dollars (£36.2 million) internationally.

With a global cumulative total of nearly 477 million (£285 million), the superhero movie has (in three weeks internationally and two weeks in America) easily surpassed the 370 million dollar (£221 million) total of The First Avenger.

Its strong performance meant the film retained the number one spot Stateside this week although globally it was beaten by animated Amazon jungle tale Rio 2, which took in 62.3 million dollars (£37.2 million) internationally.

Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic Noah, starring Russell Crowe and Emma Watson, was in third at the international box office.

Divergent, which is based on the best-selling first book in Veronica Roth's trilogy and stars Shailene Woodley, was fourth with 23.2 million dollars (£13.8 million).

It comes as Lionsgate announces that the third instalment in the series will be split into two releases.

The sequel, Insurgent, will be unveiled in 2015 and it has now been decided that the big screen adaptation of the third book, Allegiant, will be in two parts. The first will open in March 2016 and the second will be unveiled in March 2017.
