Brittany Murphy's mother and husband believe she died because of a congenital heart murmur.
Speaking to People magazine in their first interview since the 32-year-old Clueless star's sudden, tragic death on December 20, Sharon Murphy and Simon Monjack shot down rumours linking Brittany's death to mental health problems, drug use or an eating disorder.
Monjack said: "Do you not think anybody would have picked up on this anorexic, mentally deranged person?"
Brittany's mother fears her daughter's "bubbly" personality was misinterpreted, saying: "She never even drank, maybe a glass of champagne at New Years - but everyone used to say she was wasted, she was this, she was that. It was hard for anyone to imagine that somebody was so high on life."
Monjack and Brittany's mother say her heart condition was diagnosed in her teens and had been followed up with proper medical care.
Monjack said: "We had it checked out every which way you could imagine."
Speaking of her daughter's sudden death, Sharon said: "She had a little bit of a cold. You could never in a billion years imagine this happening."
Brittany was found in the bathroom of her Hollywood Hills home on December 20 and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Coroner's officials are awaiting the results of toxicology tests to determine how she died. They have said the family reported Murphy was ill with flu-like symptoms in the days before her death.
Her family laid her to rest at a funeral service on December 24 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills.
