Jason, who makes his film directing debut with the movie, encouraged the British comic and his co-stars to improvise and play around with their characters on set.

"The part that's a dream is that as a director you want options, and Russell's constantly improvising and inventing and because of that, instead of having just one version of a joke in the editing room you have six or seven to choose from," Jason explained.

"The nightmare part is that his flights of fancy can be, at least from an editorial perspective, difficult to mould and shape. You have to have a vision of what you want from a given scene so that his wild imagination doesn't take you off track."

Russell plays a drunken playboy in the remake of the 1980s comedy Arthur, alongside Dame Helen Mirren who plays his long-suffering nanny.

Modern Family director Jason was impressed by how the two stars performed.

"Russell's a much more disciplined, dramatic actor than people give him credit for and Helen Mirren is a much funnier and wicked comedian than people give her credit for, so their styles aren't as disparate as one might think," he added.

:: Arthur is in cinemas from today.
