Bird: Inbetweeners 2 on the way
Inbetweeners star Simon Bird has revealed that a sequel to the hit film is in the works.
The 28-year-old actor, who plays bookish Will McKenzie in the E4 show, admitted, at the launch of his new comedy series Chickens, that a follow-up is on the way, reported What's On TV.
"Yes, we are doing another movie, but writing it takes a lot longer than people assume," he said.
"When the last movie was such a success, people think you can just go ahead and do another just like it straight away. But the writers have to have time to work on the script and come up with ideas. I also think us actors wanted just a little bit of a break."
Simon's co-stars Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison and James Buckley are expected to return for the second instalment, which is rumoured to see the hapless friends backpacking in Australia.
Simon admitted the cast were taken aback by the huge success of the show, which ran for three series from 2008 to 2010, and the spin-off film The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011.
"The Inbetweeners was the first comedy E4 had ever done, and we were surprised how well it did. The first series wasn't watched by that many, and there wasn't a particularly big reaction to it at the beginning, so after the first series we all went back to our jobs - Joe to tutoring, myself to doing my PHD, James was fitting kitchens, while Blake worked at the scare chamber at Madame Tussauds," he said. "Then the buzz started and it was all change..."
Joe, who plays unlucky-in-love Simon Cooper, added: "We were really surprised even though we knew there'd be an audience for it because of the TV series."
