Diana Norman worked as a newspaper reporter before a career as a freelance journalist and novelist.

Barry said his wife, who died at home on Thursday, had been seriously ill and spent some time in hospital last year.

He said: "She wrote a number of novels under the name Diana Norman and in the last four or five years she wrote historical thrillers under the name Ariana Franklin."

The couple met while working as journalists and married in 1957.

Mr Norman said: "I was working as a gossip writer on the Daily Sketch for my sins, which was the only job I could get, and she was working as a very highly respected writer on the Daily Herald as it was then.

"We met in Fleet Street and married."

The four novels she wrote as Ariana Franklin feature the 12th century female pathologist Adelia Aguilar.

The first, Mistress Of The Art Of Death, won the Crime Writers' Association prize for historical fiction.

Diana also leaves two daughters, Samantha and Emma, and three grandsons.
