Elizabeth Banks has confessed she found filming new crime thriller Man On A Ledge "really, really scary".

The Our Idiot Brother actress plays a hostage negotiator in the film, with Avatar's Sam Worthington playing escaped convict Nick Cassidy, who takes to a ledge high above New York in a bid to clear his name.

"The toughest thing about making this film was I had to break up a fire fight where all these SWAT guys are shooting at Sam Worthington's character and I go in and say, 'Don't shoot'," she said at the film's LA premiere.

"Breaking up a fire fight and having a bunch of automatic weapons pointed at you, even though you know they're fake, is really, really, really scary. Much scarier than being on a ledge."

Elizabeth, who soon stars in sci-fi action film The Hunger Games alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, was full of praise for her co-star Sam.

"He's delightful and he's funny and he's fast and he's very heroic," she said.
