Baldwin eyes film-making underbelly

Alec Baldwin carries and kisses his pregnant wife Hilaria Thomas on the red carpet at Cannes

Alec Baldwin has revealed it was both "humbling" and "exhilarating" shooting his latest film Seduced and Abandoned, a documentary about trying to finance a film at Cannes.

The 30 Rock star admitted he was exhausted after flying straight from New York after his last performance in play Orphans on Broadway, with his pregnant wife Hilaria Thomas, to attend the premiere of the movie he made with James Toback at the film festival.

To capture the reality of the process, James and Alec went around Cannes last year pitching a film, a remake of Bernardo Bertolucci's notorious Last Tango In Paris, to be titled Last Tango In Tikrit, directed by James and starring Alec and Neve Campbell.

Most people they interviewed offered less than half the financial backing they were asking, they were told they needed a "bigger name" actress, and one financier suggested Alec go back to submarine films like The Hunt For Red October, while another called him a "TV actor".

Alec said: "The film has to be two things. It has to be Jimmy and I humbling ourselves trying to sell a movie here - and it is humbling. And then some sort of homage to Cannes."

He added he had found it exhilarating and would now like to make more documentaries.

Alec revealed: "Let's take some iconic tableau in society - the Super Bowl, a murder trial, the Country Music Awards. We'll think of something that's just a world unto itself and go and make a documentary."

Meanwhile, he also admitted the poor sales and the early closure of Orphans on Broadway had been not been easy.

"We did not have the result that we wanted," he said. "In some camps we did. But The Times and things like that were rather unkind about the play and me.

"It's not like the TV show [30 Rock]. 'I did the TV show and myself and everyone on the TV show, we won every prize they had three or four times in a row. So doing the play was a bit sobering."
