James Cameron's Avatar was today nominated for nine Oscars while two Irish animated films were recognised by the Academy.

Avatar and the war-on-terror thriller The Hurt Locker lead the Academy Awards with nine nominations each, including best picture and director for James Cameron and ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow.

For the first time the Oscars feature 10 best- picture contenders instead of the usual five. Also nominated for Best Picture were District 9, Up, Inglourious Basterds, The Blind Side, Up In The Air, A Serious Man, An Education and Precious.

There was disappointment for Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, who was overlooked for her role in The Lovely Bones, but good news for Irish animation as both The Secret of Kells and Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty were both nominated in their respective categories.

Other acting nominees include Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side, Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, Mo'Nique for Precious and Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds.
