American actor Ed Lauter dies at 74

American actor Ed Lauter has died aged 74.

The character actor played chauffer to the female character Peppy Miller in the Oscar-winning 'The Artist'.

According to reports, Lauter died yesterday of mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lung, commonly caused by asbestos exposure.

Lauter also starred in ER, Alfred Hitchcock's final movie 'Family Plot' in 1976 and opposite Hollywood star Burt Reynolds in 1974’s ‘The Longest Yard’.

The actor started out his career as a stand-up comedian and was famous for his uncanny impersonations of his fellow stars.
