Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria chose a white Georges Hobeika gown, with sparkly embellishments on her hips and capped sleeves.

Joining Longoria in the white stakes was Orange Is The New Black's Laverne Cox, who wore an elegant Elizabeth Kennedy gown with a sprawling train.

The Danish Girl's Alicia Vikander joined the white theme in a sequinned Louis Vuitton dress.

Australian actress Cate Blanchett oozed old Hollywood glamour in a pink, fringed Givenchy gown.

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez showed off her enviable curves in a figure-hugging, yellow Giambattista Valli gown with a cape.

Other actresses who joined the cape brigade included Emilia Clarke of Game Of Thrones, who wore a black Valentino dress.

Brie Larson opted for a beaded gold gown with cut out panels from Calvin Klein. Talking on the red carpet, she told E! News host Ryan Seacrest: "It's Calvin Klein and they made it for me. It's heavy but in a great way, it's like I'm in a hug constantly, I don't feel so vulnerable. I feel very protected, like I have Joan of Arc armour on."

Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt kept her look simple with a blue, strapless dress from Reem Acra.

She told E! host Giuliana Rancic: "I feel really comfortable, it's the second dress I tried on and I just knew."

Joy star Jennifer Lawrence stood out in a red column gown with side cut outs from Dior, while Kate Hudson off a bit of flesh in a two-piece Michael Kors outfit.
