Adrien Brody has been cast in the title role in revenge movie Emperor.

The Oscar-winning Pianist star said he felt "compelled to accept the challenge" after being approached by director Lee Tamahori about portraying the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, reported Deadline.

The film is from Belgian finance, production and sales firm Corsan, who Adrien worked with on upcoming romantic drama Third Person.

The 41-year-old actor said: "I have long admired Lee's work and been a true fan since he blew me away with Once Were Warriors. The gritty and complex nature of his films and the characters within them haunt me to this day.

"When Lee approached me to play the role of Charles V - a man with great power and greater flaws whose demons took his empire to the brink - I felt compelled to accept the challenge."

The period piece will focus on Charles V, who was trying to hold together the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century. It has been described as a look at a debauched world of wealth, sex, manipulation and treason.

Production is due to start in August.

Adrien has two films due out this year - Third Person and action movie American Heist.
