Michael Flatley has revealed he has not always taken proper care of his body throughout his career and is now "paying the price".

"I've always been one to tell the dancers to make sure they look after themselves, eat properly, not go out too much, stretching properly," he said.

"We have great physio and great people with us to look after that.

"I didn't have any advice when I was starting out so I did the wrong thing every time.  As a result now my bod's paying the price, a terrible toll."

Flatley made the comments in Christmas in New York, a show airing Wednesday ahead of Irish TV's launch in the US.

The 57-year-old dancer will finally retire next year after two months on Broadway with his show Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games.

Despite the physical toll his career has taken, however, he says he has no regrets and will miss the "adrenalin buzz" of performing on stage.

"I wouldn't trade it for the world.  I'm the luckiest guy in the world," he said.
