Irish actor Michael Fassbender has received his first Oscar nomination.

Although the Kerry native has stated that he won't be campaigning for a gold statue this year after being snubbed for his role in Shame, he has been finally recognised by the academy.

Fassbender is nominated for the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in 12 Years a Slave.

And U2 have been nominated for Best Original Song for Ordinary Love in Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom. The Irish band are expecting to take home a statue after winning in the same category at the Golden Globes.

Philomena, which was filmed in Ireland, has also received a number of nominations, including Best Actress, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
