Majella O'Donnell to undergo double mastectomy in February
MAJELLA O'Donnell has decided to undergo a double mastectomy in order to make certain that she stays cancer free.
Majella had previously decided to have just one breast removed.
However her husband, singer Daniel O'Donnell, has revealed that she has now decided to remove both as a preventative measure.
“The only thing she has to face now, and this is her own way of facing it, she's going to have a double mastectomy in February and that's her security I suppose, for the future. Preventative,” Mr O'Donnell said.
The singer said they had met a woman in a supermarket who revealed that after recovering from breast cancer, it later developed in her other breast.
“The doctors would say that radiation is just as successful you know, that the chances of it coming back in the other breast are, you know, very minute.
“But you know strangely enough when we were after being at the doctor and getting all that we went into the supermarket and we met a woman who came over to us.
“The woman spoke to us and she said 'I'm going through the same thing' and she said 'I had it whatever many years ago' and she said 'this is my second time'.
“She said 'I've got it in my other breast'. And it was almost like an affirmation to Majella that, that was the right thing for her to do,” he said on RTE's The Late Late Show.
Majella raised €500,000 for the Irish Cancer Society when she had her hair shaved live on the show after being diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.
What made her illness harder was that husband Daniel was on tour in the US while Majella stayed in Ireland to undergo treatment.
The pair were reunited at Dublin Airport earlier this week for the first time since October 26.
The couple were then swamped by well-wishers when Daniel was invited to cut the ribbon on a new Best of Irish Designs Collection in department store Clerys.
