Lights across the briny sea

There is something undeniably and deeply romantic about a lighthouse, and Ireland is particularly blessed with some very fine examples. Happy news therefore that, thanks to Great Lighthouses of Ireland - an imaginative new all-island tourism initiative developed by the Commissioners of Irish Lights - 12 of these are now available to visit, explore, and even stay in. All set in stunning locations, including Fanad, Clare Island, Hook Head, Valentia Island and Wicklow, these lighthouses each reflect their individual history and heritage, nature and environment. The re-invention of these lighthouses as visitor attractions and unique self-catering accommodation is a smart, sustainable initiative, and an incentive to visit some of the most fascinating and unique places along the Irish coast, as well as discover the stories of the people who lived in and tended them, and some of the great historical sea rescues, and disasters. Great views too, natch.
