Singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen died in his sleep after falling down in the middle of the night at his Los Angeles home, his manager Robert B Kory told The New York Times.

“Leonard Cohen died during his sleep following a fall in the middle of the night on November 7. The death was sudden, unexpected and peaceful.”

It was reported in the New Yorker’s radio program that Cohen had been battling cancer, and Cohen discussed his declining health in his recent interview with the publication.

The Canadian singer was 82 when he passed away. His health had been in decline for much of the year, though he rarely spoke about his illness.

He recently released his final studio LP, You Want It Darker, on which he addressed the end of his life.

In an interview with the New Yorker, he discussed his unfinished work: “I don’t think I’ll be able to finish those songs. Maybe, who knows? And maybe I’ll get a second wind, I don’t know... I am ready to die. I hope it’s not too uncomfortable. That’s about it for me.”

He then made light of the comments by saying: “I’ve always been into self-dramatisation. I intend to live forever.”

Cohen is survived by his children, Adam and Lorca, and his three grandchildren, Cassius, Viva and Lyon.

Earlier this week, Adam Cohen said that his father’s funeral had taken place in his home city of Montreal.

“My sister and I just buried my father in Montreal. With only immediate family and a few lifelong friends present, he was lowered into the ground in an unadorned pine box, next to his mother and father. Exactly as he’d asked,” he wrote on Facebook.

“Thank you for your kind messages, for the outpouring of sympathy and for your love of my father.”

A memorial is due to take place in LA at a later date.
