He interviewed Cowell last week and has been encouraged to chase that TV dream.

"Simon said to me, 'Kiddo, I can see the TV career on the horizon. That was a great interview, you were very good'," said Egan, who has been presenting on ITV's Daybreak and This Morning.

Meanwhile, the star says he is continuing to "take the hit" on property investments and feels sorry for fellow Westlife star Shane Filan over the financial difficulties that left him bankrupt.

The judge on The Voice of Ireland said: "Just like everyone else, I bought houses.

"Everybody was under the impression that they way to go was to invest in property, so that's what I did.

"I have a number of three-bedroom semi-detached houses in Sligo that I rent out. Obviously the value of those houses is nowhere near the price I paid.

"I still own them. I'm renting them out, but I'm just taking the hit for them. I'm going to hold on to them for as long as I possibly can and hopefully see a turn-around."

The singer told the Sligo Champion newspaper that family members had also invested in property.

"I have family members and friends who are in the same boat who bought houses in the boom and are struggling to keep going," he said. "It's been a tough few years for everyone."

Asked about Filan's financial problems, Egan said: "It's been a very tough journey for him and his family with everything that has happened.

"I'm delighted he is getting back on track now and doing what he loves to do and what he should be doing, which is being on stage with a microphone in his hand singing, because he has such an amazing voice."
