Jumpers at the ready in battle of the toy shows
IT has been billed as the Toy Show Wars. But both sides called a truce yesterday when side-by-side they donned Christmas jumpers.
It was biggest plug the TV3 Toy Show got yet, and ironically it came from Late Late Toy Show host Ryan Tubridy when he invited Alan Hughes on his radio show.
However, the Ireland Am host denied his TV3 Toy Show — which airs the same day as the Late Late Toy Show — stood any chance of overtaking the RTE ratings “juggernaut”.
“For a start our show is on earlier in the night, and it's not a set piece, rather a 30- minute version of what we have been doing for years with toy segment on Ireland AM,” said Alan.
Back on the subject of Xmas jumpers, rival Ryan revealed how he took credit for kick-starting a whole industry of ridiculous Bridget Jones-style jumpers.
“When I took on the Late Late Show the first time and I did the Toy Show I think I just wore a regular V neck.
“The following year I thought I'd ditch the jumper and there was a thing of ‘No you can't'. Then people sent in the jumpers,” he said.
He also said he is already getting very excited about his mystery opening act who he will appear alongside on the most watched programme of the year.
“The opening act is something I have been keen to get going as a theme for the last couple of years,” he revealed.
Both airing on November 29, The TV3 Toy Show begins at 8pm with the Late Late Toy Show at 9:30pm.
