Last week I showed a game from the French Club Championship, which recently took place in Montpellier. The Bischwiller club from Alsace won that tournament with a round to spare. The winners had a great mix of strong French players, including seven-time French champion Etienne Bacrot, and some highly rated foreign players, such as Anish Giri (The Netherlands) and Arkadij Naiditsch (Germany).

Today I'd like to present another nice game from that tournament.

Flear - Brunner

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6

3.Nf3 b6 4.e3 Bb7

5.Bd3 d5 6.0-0 Nbd7

7.b3 Bd6 8.Nc3 a6

9.Bb2 0-0 10.Rc1 Qe7

11.Na4 c5 12.cxd5 exd5? (D)

Sometimes one mistake is all it takes to lose the game. Black had to play 12...Nxd5, but it was difficult to see that 12...exd5, which is a very common move in similar positions, would lead to huge problems for Black. GM Flear deserves great praise for his tactical foresight:

13.Nxb6!! Nxb6 14.dxc5 Bxc5

15.Bxf6 gxf6 16.Nh4!

This is the point of White's sacrifice on move 13 - the threats of Nh4-f5 or Qd1-h5 are impossible for Black to meet satisfactorily.

16...Rfc8

17.Nf5 Qe6 18.Qh5 Ba3

19.Qh6! Qxf5 20.Bxf5 Rxc1

21.Bxh7+ 1-0
