How do I control in-app purchases?

This is the bane of parents' lives: apps that are 'free' but that sucker kids into purchasing a never-ending list of in-game accessories. You can turn off an iPhone or iPad's ability for in-app purchases in the device's settings. It uses a separate passcode that you do not need to share with the child. Simply go into the device's 'settings', choose 'general' and then choose 'restrictions'. If you choose to 'enable' restrictions, you can enter a password. Once this is done, you can simply disallow in-app purchases by tapping the digital switch within 'restrictions'.
On Android devices, you can simply set a password for all purchases in the 'settings' area of the Play (app) Store.
