Some fans slept overnight in a bid to be among the first in the country to get their hands on the new generation console, which launched just a week after Microsoft's Xbox One.

GAME stores opened at midnight to sell PS4s to some of the first people in the country who had pre-ordered the console, with a limited number available to buy on a first-come, first-served basis at the 'PS4 Lounge'.

Launch day pre-orders for Sony's PS4 have been sold out since August, so this could be the last chance for anyone who wants to get their hands on a console before Christmas.

GAME said the demand for pre-orders of the PS4 was four times higher than with the PS3, and that they opened 300 stores at midnight to cater for the surge in customers.

Martyn Gibbs, CEO, said: “This is bigger than anything we’ve ever seen before and it is fantastic to be partnering with Sony for the launch.

“The new generation of consoles will be at the forefront of gaming for years to come and we are very excited to see what the future has to hold.”
