The wallets of PC gamers know to fear the phrase "Steam sale," and with good reason. Featuring discounts of up to 80% on big name games as well as smaller indie titles, the sale is very tempting.

Running from the 27th November to December 3rd, the platform offers a number of different promotions, from discounts lasting for the the whole sale to the impulse-buy-inducing flash sales, where new games go on sale for eight hours every eight hours.

Here's a quick look at some of our picks:

Sleeping Dogs - The critically acclaimed open-world crime action game was one of the surprise hits of 2012. Following the adventures of undercover cop Wei Shen, the player has to infiltrate the Hong Kong underworld, using various skills to get in with the Triad.

Prison Architect  - This is an early access game, meaning players are playing the unfinished alpha version of the game. While this might seem like a rip-off, a strong community has grown up around this indie game. The game will be familiar to any fans of Theme Hospital and management games of that ilk. You are the prison overlord and your job is to design the prison and manage the prisoners. The developers are very open to chatting with players and the game is shaping up nicely.

The Walking Dead - The game that's arguably better than the TV show. Mostly a point n click adventure, the writing is fantastic, the scares are real and the player decisions are meaningful. Not one for fans of constant action, this game is more like an interactive TV episode or comic. Huge emphasis is placed on decision making, whether choosing your words or your actions, and quite often you will literally choose who lives or dies. When the action lands, it comes thick and fast, with precision mouse clicks on zombie heads par for the course.

The Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim - For under €10 you'll get an epic game that'll last for weeks. One of the top games of last year, Skyrim took single-player role playing games to a whole new level. Adventure through the icy province of Skyrim, battling dragons, skeletons and all manner of creatures (while possibly becoming a creature yourself!) Fantasy adventure at its finest.

The Cave - Coming in at under a fiver, this adventure game has a lot of pedigree in its development team. Created by Ron Gilbert, the guy behind legendary Monkey Island, this is an adventure game that will bring on smiles well after some of the more high profile games have faded away. A 2D game where you have to use different playable characters to solve puzzles, the joy here is in the interesting character development and narrative.

There are many other worthy titles on sale, though some appear to go on sale more often than not. The key here is paying attention to the flash sales and grabbing the short-time bargains. Also, beware that while some games are Mac and PC compatible, many are not.
