Another bit of bad news. A bit late to mention it, but I hadn't heard about the passing of one of our very best and popular players, Tommy Tierney from Wexford.
One of the toughest opponents I have ever played against, Tommy was a most versatile sportsman as well. He was a low single-figure golfer and a top-class snooker player. He played on the Rosslare senior cup side in golf. My personal sympathy with his widow, Nancy, herself a top-class Bridge player.
Congratulations to Fearghal O'Boyle, who was appointed assistant chief director at the European Open championships in Tromso, Norway, over the past couple of weeks. We didn't have any success at all, which was very disappointing.
I was asked a couple of times recently about passing with opening points, such as a 14-count.
Fearghal O'Boyle tells me you do not have to open the bidding, unless there is a private agreement or you do it regularly. A fascinating hand from the Bray Summer League. Can you mess NS? You should not Vul.
Bidding (NS vul)
S W N E 1NT P 2D P 3H P 4D P 4S P 6H P
Now, let's suppose W buts in with 3C, what does N do. Let''s say 3D and E ups the anti with 5C. Not so easy now, is it, especially as EW can sacrifice to any level. Don't let vul opponents a free run.
