The game, which involves tapping your device's screen to propel a small bird through a series of strategically placed pipes, has topped the App Store's chart of the most popular free apps.

Despite its apparent simplicity, thousands of users have taken to Twitter and Vine to vent their frustration at how increasingly difficult and addictive the game is.

One erudite user took to the App Store review section to bemoan how the game was "life ruiningly addictive". "I haven't slept, I used to sleep like a baby. Now I can't," they wrote. "I lie in bed, I can hear flappy bird taunting me to try and beat my score again. when I close my eyes I see flappy bird. I haven't eaten. I see flappy bird in the food on my plate. I hear him in the voices of those I love" [sic].

There appears to be no strategy or tips to dispense in order to obtain a high score, other than taking measures to unsure your screen's sensitivity, such as removing any cases from your iOS device.

The app's sudden level of success is somewhat of a mystery given that it was first made available back in May last year. Its creator Dong Nguyen, who is based in Hanoi, Vietnam, has been advising players to take breaks from playing the game for long periods of time.

He also claims the game is actually easier on Android than on iOS, which may come as welcome news to frazzled gamers.
