Gamers have expressed disbelief that Windows 10, Microsoft's new operating system, is charging people to play Solitaire.
The popular card game is one of several that have been updated and bundled into an app called "Microsoft Solitaire Collection".
Users wanting to play the games without being interuppted by a slew of adverts must now upgrade to a premium edition costing $9.99 a year.
Solitaire has been a included free in most Microsoft operating systems since Windows 3.0.

Those who have tried to play the free version by enduring the adverts were not impressed.
According to PC Gamer: "The ads in question aren't small banners that appear at the bottom of the screen while you play. They run over the full Solitaire window, some for 15 seconds and some for 30 seconds, and while they don't seem to pop up very often …. they can't be aborted."
Microsoft has not responded to requests for comment.
