How do you find the anime convention in your town? Follow the people dressed like super heroes, game legends and anime stars.
For some people, Nom Con is all about the chance to buy hard-to-find anime, while for others it's a non-stop gaming fest, but the most obvious interest group is the cosplayers. Whether it's illuminous hair, full body armour or not much clothing at all, cosplayers are the one group that are easily identifiable for the most part.
We spoke with a number of cosplayers to see who they were playing and why they enjoy it.
The cosplayers we interviewed all had great reasons for playing their characters. Emily from Dublin's knowledge of the female Thor could have filled a whole article and Dan Nolan is such a fan of Assassin's Creed cosplay that he's already making plans for Ubisoft's upcoming Assassin's Creed Unity (although he won't attempt the female lead.)
There was a genuine sense of belonging, with many of the cosplayers saying that the convention allowed them to express themselves with like minded people.
A level of respect was clear, both for the craftsmanship that went in the outfits and the amount of expression involved in the character choice. More than one friendship was heard evolving based on a mutual favourite character.
