Tommy Lee Jones has been cast in World War II drama Emperor.

The No Country For Old Men actor will play General Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander of the occupying forces in Japan after the country's surrender, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Tommy will bring strength, intelligence and gravitas to the portrayal of Gen Douglas MacArthur, a legendary American hero," producer Gary Foster said.

The star, 65, joins Matthew Fox in the historical epic.

The former Lost star is tipped to play General Bonner Fellers, who finds himself in turmoil after falling in love with a Japanese exchange student from his past.

Emperor - which will be directed by the Girl With The Pearl Earring's Peter Webber - is due to start shooting at the end of this month.
