Sheridan to ride 'Into the West' once more

Wednesday February 08 2012

OSCAR-winning director Jim Sheridan is to direct an updated US version of the much-loved Traveller movie 'Into the West'.

While he wrote the first film, Mr Sheridan is now planning a 'reimagining' of the Irish story, which was first shown on the big screen in 1992, starring then husband and wife Gabriel Byrne and Ellen Barkin.

The Irish Film Board confirmed yesterday it had awarded the project its top development grant of €50,000. The original follows two young boys, Ossie and Tito, who escape the poverty of their Dublin tower block to go on the run with their beautiful, magical horse.

The scene featuring a white stallion in the lift of a Ballymun flat with the two boys became an iconic image when the film was released.

The script was written by Mr Sheridan five years before he directed the Oscar-winning 'My Left Foot' in 1989.

The film's producer, Tim Palmer, is also on board but Hollywood bible 'Screen International' revealed Mr Sheridan will take over the directing reins from the original director Mike Newell.
