Scholarship set up to honour Swayze

Monday November 30 2009

Patrick Swayze is being honoured by a US equestrian organisation, which has set up a scholarship as a tribute to the late star.

The Dirty Dancing actor - who died in September following a battle with pancreatic cancer - was a horse lover and owned several Arabian horses along with his wife Lisa Niemi, so the Arabian Horse Foundation has established a scholarship in his honour.

The scholarship from the foundation - the charitable arm of the Arabian Horse Association - will be awarded each spring to a young person involved with Arabian horses who seeks a performing arts career.

Foundation President Larry Kinneer said it honours the actor for his career and the couple's "love of the Arabian breed and contributions over the years to AHA youth programmes".
