Riseborough's rise

By James Mottram

Friday January 13 2012

Resistance (2011)

Looking at her most photogenic, Riseborough's turn as a woman suffering the loss of her husband was magnetic in this adaptation of Owen Sheers's mysterious novel about an alternate WWII.

Brighton Rock (2010)

Her breakout role, after its Toronto Festival screening, Riseborough gave a steely turn as Rose, the waitress who gets embroiled with the scarfaced seaside gangster Pinkie.

Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk To Finchley (2008)

Never mind Meryl Streep, Riseborough's take on Maggie was every bit as revealing (and "ludicrously flattering" to Thatcher, said one opponent).

Happy-Go-Lucky (2008)

Though barely seen on screen in Mike Leigh's drama, Riseborough worked tirelessly for seven months to create her character Dawn via Leigh's infamous improv sessions.

Love You More (2008)

Playing a 15-year-old punk obsessed with the eponymous Buzzcocks tune in this Sam Taylor-Wood short, Riseborough caught the eye, while the film won a Bafta nomination.
