Barry Pepper has joined the cast of the Coen brothers' True Grit.

The Saving Private Ryan star will play "Lucky" Ned Pepper, the notorious outlaw played by Robert Duvall in Henry Hathaway's 1969 classic Western, in the Coen brothers' remake, Variety reports.

Pepper will star alongside Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and Hailee Steinfeld.

The Western tells the story of 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Steinfeld) who undertakes a quest to avenge her father's death at the hands of a drifter named Tom Chaney (Brolin).

She persuades an overweight, alcoholic marshal named Rooster Cogburn (Bridges) to help her.

Ethan and Joel Coen will direct from their adapted script.

Scott Rudin is producing, along with the Coens themselves and Steven Spielberg is executive producer.

Pepper will next been seen alongside Kevin Spacey in Casino Jack, George Hickenlooper's political drama about disgraced Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
