Nick Nolte has said his surprise Oscar nomination was worth an early morning wake-up call.

The veteran actor will be competing against the likes of Christopher Plummer, Max von Sydow and Kenneth Branagh at next month's ceremony, after being recognised in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in Warrior.

Asked at the Los Angeles premiere of new HBO TV show Luck if the news made a good start to his morning, he said: "Yes it was. A little early, but I went back to sleep. It was great."

Nolte stars alongside Dustin Hoffman in Luck, a drama series about the murky world of horse-racing and gambling.

He plays race-horse trainer Walter Smith in the show, which follows owners, trainers, jockeys and gamblers at a California race-track.

The 70-year-old star revealed he had been enticed back to the small screen by the opportunity to work with "great actors" like David Milch and Dustin Hoffman.
