LAST year was "the best in living memory" for Irish cinema as box office figures reveal that the top 10 films alone took over €36m.

A wet summer, a glut of blockbuster sequels and shrewd marketing led to the record year with 'The Simpsons Movie' sitting top of the pile by grossing an incredible €6m.

Sequels in the Shrek, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Bourne and Spiderman series all earned over €3m during 2007.

The cash taken in 2006 paled in comparison - that year's 'Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest' was the top earner at €3.9m and the Top 10 films grossed a combined €30,687,000.

A spokeswoman for Carlton Screen Advertising said cinema is more popular than ever before in Ireland. "It's been a really good year for cinema," she said. Top 10 movies in 2007 1 The Simpsons Movie (€6,145,000) 2 Shrek The Third (€5,688,000) 3 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (€3,945,000) 4 Spider-Man 3 (€3,515,000) 5 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (€3,373,000) 6 The Bourne Ultimatum (€3,064,000) 7 Transformers (€2,971,000) 8 Ratatouille (€2,923,000) 9 Die Hard 4 (€2,571,000) 10 Knocked Up (2,305,000)
