LAST year was "the best in living memory" for Irish cinema as box office figures reveal that the top 10 films alone took over €36m.
A wet summer, a glut of blockbuster sequels and shrewd marketing led to the record year with 'The Simpsons Movie' sitting top of the pile by grossing an incredible €6m.
Sequels in the Shrek, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Bourne and Spiderman series all earned over €3m during 2007.
The cash taken in 2006 paled in comparison - that year's 'Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest' was the top earner at €3.9m and the Top 10 films grossed a combined €30,687,000.
A spokeswoman for Carlton Screen Advertising said cinema is more popular than ever before in Ireland. "It's been a really good year for cinema," she said.
