Jude Law's doubts about Watson

Tuesday December 15 2009

Jude Law has confessed he had his doubts about playing Dr Watson in Sherlock Holmes.

The Cold Mountain star plays sidekick to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective, played by Robert Downey Jr, in Guy Ritchie's new movie version, but admits was a little unsure about the project at first.

Jude said: "I suppose I said yes because I really wanted to work with Robert and Guy and I really loved our initial meetings, and then part of me thought what have I just agreed to?"

He explained: "Initially I thought a part like this can't be reinvented but then I went back and realised that actually a lot of the ideas they had and where they wanted me to take him was actually very similar to the Conan Doyle Watson anyway, so it was kind of a bit more of a rediscovery.

"And as soon as Robert and I worked together and it was as simple as things like if Watson is very anal and together and starched then Holmes is allowed to be more and more Bohemian and wayward. And we suddenly found this very natural forging of two characters that were really symbiotic and that made it really fun."

Sherlock Holmes is released in cinemas on December 26.
