HOLLYWOOD stars Johnny Depp and Robert Downey Jnr have been invited to a high-profile comedy film festival here, writes Majella O'Sullivan.

Organisers of the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival hope to deliver at least one of the big names to Waterville, Kerry, this August.

The town has had a long association with Chaplin. The comic holidayed there for more than 40 years with his family. Two of his daughters, Josephine and Annie, still have houses in the area.

Artists are now being invited to tender for the design of 'The Charlie', the festival's new award.

"The design will look at Charlie's pioneering spirit," said Michael Cawley, the festival's head of marketing. "It will be presented to the best film of the festival and will, like Chaplin's films, stand the test of time."
