Gerard Butler will join Vanessa Redgrave in a contemporary version of Shakespeare's play Coriolanus.
The modern adaptation of the Bard's Roman tragedy marks the directorial debut for The English Patient actor Ralph Fiennes, who also stars in the titular role.
The Hollywood Reporter said Gerard will face Ralph as rebel commander Tullus Aufidius, with veteran actress Vanessa starring as Coriolanus' ambitious mother Volumnia.
Gerard, 39, is considered Hollywood hot property after starring as King Leonidas in the hack-and-slash comic book adaptation of 300 and his signature has been considered a coup for the film's producers.
The Scot has since gone on to star in PS, I Love You, The Ugly Truth and Law Abiding Citizen.
Coriolanus also stars The Incredible Hulk's William Hurt and relative newcomer Jessica Chastain.
Filming is due to begin next March on location in Serbia.
