THE representative body for television and film directors last night called for the retention of the Irish Film Board.

Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI) said it opposed the axing of the film board as mentioned in the McCarthy report.

It follows comments made by Neil Jordan at the Global Irish Economic Forum in Farmleigh over the weekend. "So many institutions have failed the Irish people. The culture industry, they have not failed, they are perhaps the only success story that remains after the last 20 years," he said.

Reiterating Mr Jordan's comments, Ciaran Donnelly, chairman of the SDGI, said "the marriage of creativity and industry" had paid both artistic and fiscal returns to the State.

The guild also highlighted Ireland's successes at the Emmy Awards where director Dearbhla Walsh won for "Little Dorrit" and Brendan Gleeson for his performance in 'Into the Storm', which was helmed by Irish director Thaddeus O'Sullivan.
