Fantastic Five: the leading lady roles
Lambasted at the time but now a cult favourite, Rachel Talalay's 1995 film Tank Girl starred Lori Petty as a punk warrior adrift in a post-apocalyptic wilderness.
In Joe Wright's underrated action thriller Hanna, Saoirse Ronan (right) plays a slight but deadly teenage girl who's been trained from birth as an assassin by her father, and goes on a trans-European rampage after he's killed. Great action, no unnecessary glamour.
Played by Famke Janssen in five X-Men films, Jane Grey is one of the most rounded female superheroes, who struggles to control her terrifying telekinetic powers.
Kick-Ass's Hit Girl is a scarily believable creation, an 11-year-old girl (Chloe Moretz) who sets out to avenge her father's murder by donning a cape and mask and knocking seven bells out of anyone who rubs her up the wrong way.
Guardians of the Galaxy is another superhero film with a refreshing sense of humour, and Zoe Saldana (below) takes no prisoners playing Gamora, a bright green alien assassin who's angry, annoyingly self-righteous and very hard to get along with.
