Corrie's Rita asks police "Do you know who I am?" as she and daughter arrested on drink driving charges

Soap actress Barbara Knox and her daughter both arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after an afternoon out.

The 80-year-old actress had been enjoying an afternoon out with her daughter Maxine Ashcroft  when they were pulled over by police who breathalysed the 56-year-old on suspicion of drink driving. 

The officers arrested Maxine and took her to a station in Cheshire, where tests showed she was three times over the legal limit

However, a short while later her mother, who has played shopkeeper Rita for mover 40 years, turned up at the station, demanding her daughter be released. 

Police offers are said to have suspected Knox, who had driven to the station, was over the limit and arrested the 80-year-old.

She is reported in the British press to have yelled: "Do you know who I am?" at the arresting officer. 

A Cheshire Police spokesman  said: "Police stopped a car in Hollow Lane in Knutsford.

A 56-year-old woman from Gloucestershire was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

"An 80-year-old woman from Knutsford later arrived at Knutsford Police Station and was also arrested on suspicion of drink-driving."

According to a representative of Granada "This is a personal and private matter."
