Comic not laughing as radio axe falls
Comedian and 'Naked Camera' star PJ Gallagher yesterday expressed his surprise after Newstalk axed him as a holiday stand-in.
Gallagher and co-presenter Jenny Buckley had been due to host Tom Dunne's morning programme all this week but the show was cancelled after just two days.
"I think they wanted something safe and I wasn't considered safe enough," Gallagher said yesterday.
"Perhaps they were expecting a programme like the 'Tom Dunne Show' but I'm nothing like Tom Dunne. I suppose my biggest problem was laughing too much at the callers ringing in, but I don't take myself too seriously so I'm hardly going to take anyone else seriously either.
"I was surprised because I thought the second day went well. The station felt what we were doing was "too leftfield" for Tom's programme," he added.
Station insiders claim Newstalk's decision was prompted by fears of a ratings meltdown with the arrival of Ryan Tubridy in the same slot on 2fm.
"The arrangements for Tom's fill-in were that it would be a combination of PJ, Jenny and Sile Seoige," a spokesman said. "Sile got a particularly good reaction from listeners when she was on in the first week so we decided to bring her back for a few days this week."
Gallagher stressed there was no acrimony between him and Newstalk.
