Three's company as academy honours Toibin

PRESIDENT-elect Michael D Higgins took time out from writing his acceptance speech last night to attend a ceremony honouring veteran actor Niall Toibin.

The 81-year-old star of stage and screen was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Irish Film & Television Academy in the IFI Dublin in a ceremony attended by family and friends.

"When I heard Niall was getting an award, I wanted to be here," Mr Higgins said.

Mr Toibin, pictured with the president-elect and veteran broadcaster Gay Byrne, said he was delighted to receive the honour.
