SABINA Higgins has made a return to the stage to commemorate the 1913 Lockout.

She joined a string of well-known names for the Larkin Hedge School 2013's 'Solidarity Gathering' at Liberty Hall Theatre in Dublin last night.

With President Michael D Higgins among some 350 people in the audience, Mrs Higgins told the Irish Independent she was looking forward to treading the boards once more.

"It's been quite a while since I've been on stage," she said. "I feel an actor is what I am, but really I just don't have the time for it. It's lovely to get involved."

She performed readings from the works of Maud Gonne, Countess Markievicz and an extract from Louis Bennett's 'The Irish Citizen'.

President Higgins arrived minutes before the curtain lifted.
