Review: Scream by Nigel McCrery

Quercus, €24.40, Hardback

DCI Mark Lapslie has an unusual neurological condition, synaesthesia, which confuses his senses so he actually tastes sounds.

Attending a police conference in Islamabad, he receives an email with a sound attachment of someone screaming, then dying, tasting of beetroot and salt to him. He returns to England and, with his Detective Sergeant Emma Bradbury, tries to find out the victim's name.

But as they close in on the killer Lapslie is suspended and taken off the case. The third case in a truly different and enjoyable series of police procedurals.
