Review: Broken by Karin Slaughter

(Century £18.99)

Saturday July 31 2010

The discovery of the body of a young woman in the icy waters of Lake Grant ruins the Thanksgiving holiday for Dr Sara Linton, Grant County's former medical examiner, back home for the first time in more than three years following the death of her husband, the popular Chief of Police Jeffery Tolliver.

When a local young man is arrested for the murder and confesses, and is subsequently found dead by his own hand in police custody, Special Agent Will Grant of the Georgia Investigation Bureau arrives in town and asks for Sara's help. She is reluctant, because it will bring her face to face with Detective Lena Adams, a woman Linton hates because she believes she caused her beloved husband's death. But once involved, Linton becomes deeply suspicious of the confession and of the wall of silence in the police station. And then another young student, one who had links with the first victim, is found murdered.

Karin Slaughter successfully brings together Dr Sara Linton, who has featured in a number of mysteries set in Grant County, and Will Grant, Slaughter's main protagonist in her Atlanta-based thrillers. She delivers an edgy tale of small-town corruption and mistrust with more than enough plot twists to keep readers on their toes.
