THE winners in the 60th Texaco Children's Art Competition have received the presidential seal of approval.

The event is "ingrained in the memories of generations of Irish children", according to President Michael D Higgins.

A total of 126 winners from this year's competition were honoured at the ceremony in Kilmainham, Dublin.

Overall winner Shania McDonagh, who has been honoured five times throughout the years, received a €1,500 prize.

The student, from Mount St Michael's Secondary School in Claremorris, Co Mayo, has been awarded first prize in a variety of different age categories.

This year it was a pencil study called 'Coleman' that impressed the judges, leading to descriptions of her as a "young artist of exceptional talent and ability".

Mr Higgins commended the assembled winners and their families on their hard work and the "creative genius it represents".
